is it correct to say: "...but the plan goes down the toilet"?
i was describing a movie to my friend and i got stuck trying to say :
"they try to assault a bank but the plan goes down the toilet... is it right? if not is there another expression to be used wihout changing the meaning?

Haha, you can, but it's informal and has a bitter connotation to it. "Down the tubes/drain" is a bit more neutral but still informal. It sounds like in the context you're giving it would work, although I wouldn't if it's for an academic paper or work report or something like that.
