In the Philippine we smile and then shake hands. we also have this gesture when meeting older people or older relatives for the first time called "mano". We put their hands to our forehead like in this picture.http://filipinofunfacts.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/bless1.jpg

In Indonesia, for most people it better shake hands (salaman) and bow slightly to be extra polite then say something pleasant and friendly or while shaking hands. You always gesture to older people or anyone you know with a slight bow and it's more polite always smile. For some women you can kiss their cheeks (cheek to cheek usually; usually woman to woman) and for older, respectable muslims you should give them a salute gesture called salam or salaam in Arabic. These are some special gestures usually for the Muslim natives (pribumi) http://frommuglawithlove.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/9463628-96b3487d-560.jpg http://www.indo5.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/salaman4.jpg. There are many Chinese in Indonesia so it's acceptable to do a regular deep bow or a firm normal handshake. Note that if you are greeted "assalamualaikum" you should greet back with "waalaikumsalam", most people in Indonesia are Muslims; they'll appreciate this. These are the basic manners in Indonesia, there are so many other ethnic groups but these are the generally acceptable gesture.

In South Africa the English speaking members of the population would smile shake hands and say "It's a pleasure to meet you."
