The basically means that the more prominent a person is, the more vulnerable they become. A CEO of a company is more likely to have his mistakes scrutinized than a regular employee. A celebrity couple is more likely to be affected by a scandal such as an affair than a regular couple is. An off-key note is more likely to be noticed when made by the lead singer than by his backing vocalists. Etc. etc.

behind = "arse" in the UK, "ass" in the US if you want a less crude term you can also say "but"
