What's the difference between the words"customer" and "client"

a customer is one that usually comes into your place of business and buys something. a client is one that usually picks up a phone and calls for your service.

good question! From my point of view they are not very different , a client is usually more formal in my opinion. Maybe a term that would be used in a business situation. For example a lawyer would say " I have a meeting with my 'client' later." Where as customer is more frequently used and more informal. An example would be "We have to make sure we take care of the customer , or he will do business elsewhere."
