An expert is someone with special skills of a subject An academic is someone with great proven knowledge of a subject I suppose they are interchangable though.

An expert is someone who is highly skilled in a talent. Example: I am a expert at fixing appliances. Academic is some one who is pursuing an education. The two could be used together as in: John is an academic expert in history.
