how do you express past simple and past continuous tense in english?

the simple past indicates that an activity or situation began and ended at a particular time in the past. example: i walked to school yesterday. (i was walking down the street) when (it began to rain): both actions accurred at the same time, but one action began earlier and was in progress when the other action accurred.

The past simple is for things that were routines in the past and the the past continous is for this that happen in a specific time in the past.
