On the one hand, yes the sentence could have been more technically correct. However, there are a few things to think about...
1) This is a spoken quote.
2) If you had listened to his statements, you'd realise quite quickly that he is not a native English speaker (however, his English is very good in spite of his strong accent).
3) It's not a good look to be critical of another person's (non-native) English skills when you make so many mistakes in your own writing. I'm sure you could have worded your question a little more thoughtfully.
