I don't know why being listened to is a key factor to their parents? When your parents become unable to continue living on their own, your family is faced with a new chapter in life. You want to offer them the best possible living situation, but you may not have the money, the time, or the space to offer them what they need. While you may be unable to provide everything for your parents in this difficult and stressful situation, it is important that you listen closely to what your parents want. That’s because their feeling of being listened to in this life-altering move is a key factor in their ability to cope in the long term with their new lives. I don't know why being listened to is a key factor to their parents? Please help elaborate it. Thanks!

By emphasing "listen closely to what your parents want", the article is emphasizing that it is important that the aging parents have input in discussing/arranging their future living arrangements. It's important for maintaining their dignity and sense of independence or self-determination to not have their choices taken away from them...something akin to being treated like children.
