If you change the sentence a little, you can find easily a diffence. For instance.. 언제 그 사과를 먹은거에요?, which means past tense.(ㄴ(은) 거에요) 언제 그 사과를 먹을거에요?, whih means futer tense.(ㄹ(을) 거에요) So, 얼마만에 일본에 간거에요? This is a past tense. ^^
