What does this sentence mean? A doctor says to his patient, “You were very lucky things did not get very much worse,” What does this sentence mean? Help me please. Thank you. :)

It means : You are lucky. Your illness isn't too bad. You will recuperate soon.

Does it help if a useful "that" is inserted? You were very lucky THAT things did not get very much worse :) (things = whatever the patient has) (get = become)
