In the US, unless the patient has specifically given permission for the doctor to discuss the case with you, privacy rules prevent the doctor from telling you anything. However, if the doctor has permission to talk to you, your questions are fine. Here are other possible questions: Is he/she improving/getting better? When will he/she be discharged from the hospital? What is the diagnosis? What treatment is he/she receiving?

Hi Iris, Something like: "Doctor, can you tell me how is he/she doing"? "How is his/her condition/state of health"? Would be perfectly fine and acceptable.
