"In order to" with modal verbs I would like to express: He has to go there, in order to be able to do it. I am not sure whether I may use um...zu in connection with modal verb. Strictly speaking I would have said this: Er muss dorthin gehen, um es zu tun kann. But it doesn´t sound good. What is correct? :)

Alternatively, "in order to" can be expressed by "damit". It can give the expression a slightly more informal feeling. "um ... zu" is neutral.
