A footpath is a designated walkway, perhaps through a park, usually surfaced with concrete, asphalt or something similar. "Keeping to footpaths" - usually "Keep to the footpath" means that you are not allowed to stray off the path and walk on the grass (in a park). It may also be used if straying off the footpath may put the walker in danger, for example at the top of a cliff. :)
