I think all are different. The translation of "His friend opened the umbrella" is 彼の友人は傘を開きました。 彼の友人は傘を開きませんでした。= His friend DIDN'T open the umbrella. I think 彼の友人の傘は開きませんでした。has two meanings. "I or someone didn't open his friend's umbrella." (I don't know who did that.) or "His friend's umbrella couldn't be opened." = No one could open his friend's umbrella.
