In American English I'd probably call it a smock. Overalls are pants with a bib and straps that go over your shoulders, like what farmers wear. A baby wears a bib to protect his or her clothes when eating. A pinney is usually a colored, sleeveless garment worn to distinguish teams in gym class. A smock is something you wear to protect your clothes if you're painting or doing something messy. Do you mean something like this?
