"Because our nature is basically good is the image" How may I understand the end of that phrase? ... is the image.

An image is something something we see, like a picture. It is a physical depiction of something or someone. So "is the image" means what is portrayed/presented to and seen by others, which is what we want them to believe. "Because our nature is basically good is what is portrayed and what we want to be believed."
