A few I've read recently and loved: "The Art of Racing in the Rain," by Garth Stein; "Flight Behavior," by Barbara Kingsolver; and the twenty-or-so books in the Patrick O'Brian "Aubrey/Maturin" series.
Read-and-reread long-time favorites include some of the short stories of Jack London (which are better than his novels IMHO); I particularly like "To Build a Fire," "Samuel," and "A Piece of Steak."
