What's the meaning of 'WOULD'? It sounds difficult to me. What exactly is 'WOULD'? For example: 'I would write something'. Does it mean 'I prefer to write something'? 'She wouldn't leave'. Does it mean 'She shouldn't leave'? 'The windows would not close'. What's the meaning of 'would' here? 'Who would live here?'. Does it mean 'Who wants to live here?'? 'Would you pour the wine, please?'. Does it mean 'May you pour the wine, please?'? 'I would have to agree'. What's the meaning of 'would' here? Has it got more meanings? Maybe thousands of meanings! Help me please. Thanks in advance.

Would means something is being done or has the possibility or intention to be done. Depending on the context it can me something like could, will, do/does. She wouldn't leave = She refused to (intended not to) leave. The windows would not close = The windows could not close= The windows were not able (possible) to be closed. Who would live here= Who could live here= Who might live here= Who possibly lives here. Would you pour= Will you pour = Could you pour (but could just asks if the person has the ability to pour. Would asks if the have the ability and intention to pour.) I would have to agree= I will have to agree.
