(What's playing?) could be asked for movies currently showing in theaters.

It depends on where someone asks this question.
"What's playing?" Can be used to ask for example what song is 'playing' on a radio or laptop
Or you can ask what TV show is 'playing' on the tv.

It is normally a reference to music, but can be a film too.
Imagine that I walked into a friend's house, heard a song that I didn't know and asked: "What's playing?" His answer would be the name of the band and the song.
Does that make sense?
