A native speaker would use the phrasal verb 'to make up'. 'Make up for lost time'. In English we don't consider time to be something that can be recovered. The time spent in jail is gone, it is finished and you can never get it back. But you can 'make up for lost time', and do things the things you couldn't when you were imprisoned.

As Paul says, you can "make up for lost time". You can also 'rebuild', or perhaps even 'restart' your life.
