Am I right in thinking that "wager" and "to wager" are the same as "bet" and "to bet" respectively? And if so are there are any little/subtle differences between the two? thanks :)

They are exactly the same; however, there's an assumption that "wager" means that there's a higher likelihood of someone actually putting money on something, whereas "bet" could simply mean I'm expressing an opinion/prediction, and may or may not involve money.

I regard them as synonyms. "Bet" is the plain, direct word and the one most people would use most of the time.
