Try: Assimil German with Ease Assimil has a nice structured course. Sometimes you can find them cheap 2nd hand on eBay.

I recommend a strictly structure book like "German in Review" or "German Grammar for Students of English." Traditional textbooks for beginners aren't organized well in my opinion, but if that's what you're looking for, try "Wie Geht's". It's VERY thorough and explains things well, but I think they made some really weird choices in regards to organization topic chapters. If you're just talking about short stories, I would recommend "Deutsche Sagen und Legenden." Each story is about 3 pages and there are English glosses. Hope this helps!

There are many choices, but I like Robert Di Donato's' Deutsch: Na klar! 7th edition (e version) with online textbook and work/lab book. Studio-D is nice ( not as thorough though) or you can try 'Passwort Deutsch'. viel Glück
