Word formation Why is viscous pronounced with SK and viscid with just S? It is obvious for me how it is to be read, and no examples (like promiscuous) are needed. More exactly, the question is how the C has fallen out of such words like viscious, scent, miscellaneous?

It's a rule picked up from Latin languages (mostly French). For ca/co/cu, the C is hard. If i, e or even y follows, then C has an S sound. History, basically. :)
