When to use 'dort' and when to use 'da' for the word 'there' Thanks!

In most of the cases, da and dort are the same: Ich bin hier, sie sind da/dort. There is one funny situation in which 'da' actually means here. Sind alle da? Is everybody here? Here you couldn't say: Sind alle dort? Because it doesn't refer to a certain place, but it is an expression: dasein.
