That depends on what criteria you are looking at. Japanese uses Chinese characters, but the grammatical system is entirely different from the Chinese system. In fact, I would say that Korean is the grammatical sibling of Japanese because both are very similar upon closer inspection.

chinese is a family unto itself with a standerized alphabet. korean and japanese are related to each other, and each had the chinese writing system introduced and modified for their language. so, no, japanese and chinese are completely different...shame on you!
