How would you interpret this sentence? How would you interpret this sentence ‘That's where the money comes from’? What’s the money? The money given to Pope or given to Church? PS: It was in 1916 and the Italians were in war with the Austrians. Thanks. It’s from A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. the context: "The Pope wants the Austrians to win the war," the major said. "He loves Franz Joseph. That's where the money comes from. I am an atheist." "Did you ever read the 'Black Pig'?" asked the lieutenant. "I will get you a copy. It was that which shook my faith."

The context doesn't make it completely clear. Probably, he means the money that the church is given by the Austrians. The Pope wouldn't receive the money directly anyway.
