Anything wrong with the word "himself" in the following sentence?
Tom thought that nobody but himself was equal to the job.

"Himself," is used correctly. However, if I understand correctly what you are trying to say, it should be, "Tom thought that nobody but himself was right for the job."

Since the pronoun isn't really being used reflexively here, it would be better to write "Tom thought that nobody but he himself was equal to the job." Better yet, "Tom thought he was the only one equal to the job."
