Don't wait for old age to wear purple. Be eccentric now; don't wait for old age to wear purple. Would you please explain the phrase? What's the meaning of "don't wait of old age to wear purple"?

Along the lines of ' Life is short, buy the shoes ! ' or Life is short, eat the cookie.

I have a vague memory of this essay or book. The author is using the wearing of purple as an example of doing something unusual or daring. She is saying that we should be daring and unconventional, and express our true selves throughout our lives, and before we reach old age. The expression is unique to the author and not a common saying, though everyone would understand the meaning.
