Farewell Today I saw this word and I was wondering is it a common word?? when do you use it? As I'd never seen that before so far.

The word 'farewell' is a more formal way to say goodbye. I think the key to this word is that it conveys a finality that simply saying 'goodbye' might not. The implication if you say 'farewell' to someone is that you are not going to see them again for a long time. And as John said, it is not commonly used in spoken language.

"Farewell" is a synonym for "goodbye" or "bon voyage" but it is not common in the spoken language. - We said farewell and boarded the plane. - A Farewell to Arms (title of a famous book by Hemingway) - It was the band's farewell concert (the last concert they gave before retiring)
