I agree with Joshua. It is "spilt", not "split". The meanings are very different.

Be careful, it is SPILT milk (or 'spilled' if you prefer American English.) S-P-I-L-T. Not 'split.'

Hello! I would have to say it depends on the situation, to which you are using it for. For an essay or project that you need to write a paper, I believe it would be perfectly acceptable. If i were for a job, or work purposes, or to a company expressing concern, I would say it would not be good to use. In everyday situations, it is fine. I hope that this helps!
