Why the past perfect is used here? Was it the first time you’d been there or had you been before? Why "you had been"? Thank you.

Good question. There are two past situations here. The one nearest the present is "the moment you were there for the first time". The one previous to that - further away from the present - is your whole life before "the moment you were there for the first time". Often the words "ever" or "never" help to clarify that this is the period we mean.
