What a difference? between FANCY and WHIMSICAL?

Fancy is used to describe something that is quite elaborate, i.e. very decorative or posh. For example, 'Oh what a fancy restaurant.' Whimiscal refers to something that is playful and quaint (which is something unusual but attractive, usually antique/ old). It's not a very serious word. For example, ‘This album was largely whimsical ... with a subtle sense of humour'
