I live in the U.S. I am barely aware of the existence of any "Canadian accent." I can talk with someone from Canada for a long time until some little thing, like the pronunciation of "out," will make me wonder and ask "are you Canadian?"
The anchor man of the (U.S.) ABC Network News for twenty years, Peter Jennings, was Canadian, and I think many U.S. listeners were completely unaware of it.
In my opinion, there is more regional difference between places within the U.S. than there is between "U.S." and "Canadian" English.
