Yes, in the U.S., professionals shake hands when they first meet each other, men and women alike. If you have an on-going relationship, like with a client where you are on-site and you see him/her every day, you would not shake hands every day. If, on the other hand, you visit the client once a month or less often, you would probably offer your hand when you meet again and exchange ""hello, how are you". These days, you don't shake hands from a seated position, even for a woman. If seated, you would rise to greet someone that you were meeting. Women now give (and expect) a full-hand handshake, not just the fingers.
