Cinema is the fancy word for film. A cinematographer is the person who sets up a shot - including angle and the amount of feet and inches everything is from the lens of the camera. In america when people go see a movie they say "Let's go see a movie". If they are interested in plays then they say "Let's go to the theatre". People who shoot video are called videographers. Lately though, some are starting to call themselves cinematographers even though they are shooting video.

I think so? I've never heard "cinema" used in any other way. Also the correct grammar would be: "How can new technology advance the cinema" The cinema is an inanimate object so it doesn't have skills. The skills belong to the people that produce the movies that end up in the cinema.
