"take shortage of sb's hide" meaning? Again, the sample is from The Shining: Ullman looked like the type of man who might take any shortage out of the head clerk's hide . . . without ever spilling a drop of blood. Could you please explain to me what "take any shortage out of the head clerk's hide" means? Thank you.

The sentence before this one indicates that the "shortage" is of money. The head clerk was responsible for making sure that the amount of money in cash register/till at the end of the day corresponded exactly with the transactions. If there was a shortage at the end of the day, the head clerk would pay for it with physical violence. (hide=skin) Ullman would do a certain amount of violence to the head clerk which was equivalent to the shortage of money. (Ullman wouldn't really do that but he looked like that kind of person)
