Can you explain this? Someone beat him to death. Is he dead or alive?

He is dead. "To death" means exactly that. Here it indicates the method used to kill him was beating. Other methods could be "He was stabbed to death" or "he was strangled to death". One exception is when we say "I was bored to death". Here it doesn't mean that I actually died. Just that I found something extremely boring.

He's dead. If I go "to Boston," I finally end up in Boston when my trip is over. If someone is beaten "to death," they are dead when the beating is over.
