What is the correct phrase and why? I wrote: Call your mother is a good idea. But someone wrote me: Calling your mother is a good idea. Other example: I like cook and eat. I like cooking and eating.

You should study the gerund. In Spanish, when you use a verb as a noun - as the subject or object of a phrase or clause - you use the infinitive form, which in English is "to + base verb" e.g. to call. In English, we sometimes use the infinitive, but often we use the -ing form in order to express the idea of activity.
