To a maximum of 4000. It's saying we may still investigate any claim, and once we are happy we will pay out whatever we think, but at most 4000. You may also have a clause which states an excess amount. In my car insurance I have an excess of £100, so if I was awarded (they agreed to pay) £500, I would have to pay the excess - the first £100.
