When the pension expense exceeds the amount of funded, what does it mean? I know the meaning of pension expense, but I don't know what "fund" means in this particular situation. I'm not if people need accounting background to explain it, but any help will do. Thanks.

As a noun, fund is an amount of money, probably in a bank account.
"We need $1000 but we only have a fund of $500."
As a verb, fund means "pay for".
"My university is funding my travel."
"The expenses are funded by the tax payers."
