How to use the word ' Afterwards' ? I am very confused about what should 'afterwards' should be located in the sentence?

The most normal positions for afterward(s) are: initial position and final position: 1) Afterwards, we went to the cinema. 2) I suffered the consequences of that for years afterwards. Usually "afterward(s)" is used to say that something happens after something else that has already been mentioned.
