I don't know when I would use these both. Can you please explain it? This is something I expected This is something I was expecting.

The meanings are essentially the same. The use of "I was expecting" is more of a storytelling mode and brings the listener along with the way you were feeling to the present moment. "I expected" is more of a statement of fact and nothing more.
