Jerry regretted not to give his mother a hug. Is that right?
1. Jerry regretted not giving his mother a hug.
2. Jerry regretted not to give his mother a hug.
3. Jerry regretted not having given his mother a hug.
Which sentence or sentences are right? Thanks!
"Jerry regretted not giving his mother a hug" is best. #2 is incorrect. There are exceptions but generally we don't use the infinitive with the verb regret. #3 is correct, but a little unnatural sounding.
