You grew up hearing about it, but I never figured I'd be going there. Hello, I'm watching Avatar and Jake said: "Up ahead was Pandora. You grew up hearing about it, but I never figured I'd be going there. Why You? Who does he talk about? But I watched it, and.. maybe my hearing is not well enough, but I hear You as well. Not I. And why do I think that there is You, but not I? There was a moment, when I was watching Sherlock and encountered a similar one: About serial suicides: [Reporter] : But you can't have serial suicides! [Lestrade] : Well, probably you can. And if the reporter said it first to Lestrade, second - is unclear, why.. who? Like in these sentences: One should help people. (Every person should) As I know. One must not kill people (No one must kill people) And if those above are right used, you also can be used as one. You should help people - It's not about person who you talk to, it's about all people. So.. Jake talks that every Earthman heard about Pandora, but has never thought of going there? But am I right? I need your help! :)I was forced to make to shorter... wait, I can comment in 9000 symbols?! Alright, I'm going to write it here, look following: Hello, I'm watching Avatar and Jake said: "Up ahead was Pandora. You grew up hearing about it, but I never figured I'd be going there. Why You? Who does he talk about? On this site Avatar (2009) Movie Script | SS I can see I grew up hearing about it, ... But I watched it, and.. maybe my hearing is not well enough, but I hear You as well. And if the reporter said it first to Lestrade, second - is unclear, why.. who? I'm told that you, as well as one, can used as... I don't know how it's called in elgish, so I ask your help just now :) Like in these sentences: One should help people. (Who one? Every person should) As I know. You're absolutely right. This is what you can call the 'generic you', and it refers to people in general. There are three ways of talking about people in general: - The impersonal pronoun 'one', which can sound outdated and pretentious. - The passive voice, which is what we tend to use in written English and more formal contexts - The 'generic you', which is usually the best option in spoken English. I hope that answers your question.
