How would you interpret theses two sentences in the last passage?
1 I feel no fear, but I am not myself.
How would you interpret ‘I am not myself’?
Does it mean he is not well? Or does it mean he is not the same himself. I think it’s the latter. What do you think?
2 I feel smaller but not lesser.
How would you interpret the word ‘lesser’ here?
Ps: I think the last passage says that he feels like being in that very beach mentioned above, right?
Thanks. And it’s from My Little Boy written by the famous Danish writer Carl Ewald.context:
There wasn’t anything between her and me then. I was hardly aware of her. Nor do I know that I have ever thought of that scene during the intervening years. And now it comes to mind so vividly: the faces, the words; it is as if I feel the sea breeze on my face…
And all of a sudden I know that then---on that summer day on the beach while the sea gulls soared---that was the day that our child was conceived in God’s lap.
The room expands around me and I am very warm inside. I feel no fear, but I am not myself. I feel smaller but not lesser.
