What does で mean when standalone? Is it like "So" I am not talking about its grammatical particle by the way.

It is an abbreviated form of 「それで」 meaning “and”, ”so”, or ”that is why”. When used as back-channeling in raised pitch, it is abbreviated from 「ふーん、それで?」 meaning “Uh-huh, so?”
