It used to be Reading has been less important than it used to be. Is this sentence grammatically correct?. Can it be used in a formal context?. I mean for an academic essay.

"Reading has been less important than it used to be." If you want to compare the importance of reading NOW compared with the PAST, then "Reading is less important than it used to be." You can add "far," as in "...far less important..." It sounds more academic. At least to me. ;-) Hope this helps. :-)
