What does "on" mean in this sentence? The example sentence is: Normally, students will be given a certificate ON completion of the course. Does the "on" have the same meaning as in " On their return, they discovered that their house had been broken into?(In this sentence, "on" means happening after and usually because of)

You are correct. In this sentence "on completion" means "after completion." Another way that you might see this sentence written is: "Normally, students will be given a certificate UPON completion of the course." "Normally, students will be given a certificate UPON COMPLETING the course." Hope this helps!
