What is the difference between EARLIER THIS MORNING and EARLY THIS MORNING?

earlier this morning means earlier than now and is also in the morning early in the morning means early, that is early for the norm around you so for me 4am, 3am

There are many instances where these can overlap, but "earlier" implies simply any time previous and appears more vague. Early would be used to specify more of a specific refence to the morning itself. If I said "Earlier this morning..." I would most likely be saying this while it is still morning time. "Early this morning..." doesn't have any connection to the current time period. That being said, in everyday speaking American English these are very interchangeable and it would be very unlikely that someone would notice this difference.
