what are the alternatives of saying " it started to rain heavily ." It started to rain cats and dogs It started to pour . There came a downpour . There came a torrential rain . What do you think of alternatives ? I'd really appreciate it if any of us could offer me some .

There are many ways of saying this, but lots of the options are quite vulgar, slang or colloquial. So you have to think about the audience/context. I quite like "The heavens opened." but I'd only use that with native speakers or people I know have a good knowledge of English.

"It started to pour" is probably the most common where I live in the U.S. It's really coming down. It's raining cats and dogs. It's really pouring.
